I am an English speaker; live in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland and I do not understand German. Amazon does not allow me to purchase a Kindle in the UK as I am living in Switzerland. I am obliged to purchase Kinle products and e-books through their German website. The only information in English is just basics about Amazon. The detailed information about the product or the books is in German. Should you purchase or receive a Kindle as a gift from the country of your choice when you leave that country Amazon will ultimately stop you purchasing through that Kindle store of your choice You will automatically be re-directed to the site of their choice based on your location independent of whether or not you understand the local language. Kindle is not a good choice for anyone who works outside their linguistic zone for long periods.
It is a better choice to have a reader that allows you to purchase e-books in your own language where and when you like.

Thank you for review. Not a techie/computer user so think the 3G may be my way to go. Can children’s books, illustrated books and specialist academic books be bought for the Kindle? Also some commentators have mentioned saving books as disks – is this difficult? how would one get the book for Kindle to disk?
This will be mt first e-reader – how does it compare honestly to feel/ thrill of reading paper book?

I just got myself an iRiver Story and I loved it, until the screen stopped working I found the bottom of the machine was opened, maybe due to a bump, twisted, or something. But It was always in its protective casing and next to my laptop, which means I treated it carefully.
I live and work in Africa, its going to be a nightmare and expensive to get this fixed. I loved it, but why do these guys make it so easy to break???
Never buy cheap I guess…

don’t forget Google is your friend : IE: you can download Calibre which can convert your books for you then put them on your Kindle , you can also download free drm strippers which take the protection away download you books by computer then do a little work and add them to kindle , it’s free, how cheap do you want it. my only bug bear is that you can’t see some of the glorious covers in color as it goes straight to chapter one

It connects to my Windows 7/64 PC fine. I drag and drop stuff all the time.
There are no page markers, which is a pain, and like most ereaders whilst reading epub format is a real pleasure, scanned pdfs are rendered tiny and a real pain.
As far as 6 inch ereaders go I have no regrets about buying it 2nd hand but I have now discovered a need for a unit which can read scanned pdfs at A4 and not shrink them.

I’ve got a PRS 300 ….I use calibre to get the books from my computer to the bookreader.
Calibre is a free program and is awesome !
So you would be able to hook the reader to computer via USB and then using Calibre to “send ur books to ur reader”

I’m almost there on buying a Sony PRS 350 but 1 thing is holding me back. I have quite a lot of ebooks on my pc but hate sitting at the desc reading them. They are in PDF, ePUB etc… formats. I know the Sony can read them but no one seems to know if I can simply connect the reader to the pc and import the books. Will I be able to do this or do I have to start buying ebooks again?
REALLY hope someone can help me, I’ve almost finished my current read so the reader may be my next purchase.

It’s not true to say you can purchase the Kindle only from Amazon: I bought mine from PC World. My only gripe is that the spoken word option is pathetic; on the occasions that I tried to use it, the readers sounded like automatons with no feeling for what they were reading at all. Also, I would prefer an English reader when reading books by Brit authors.

I have a Kindle which i bought in February 2011 and I have read 37 books already!!! As you can guess I love reading and I believe it is a very useful bit of technology as once you have finished a book you can go on the Amazon site and download books that are FREE. Excellent product A++++++++++

Why is it that everyone is looking for the dievice that will replace completely the other. Will the Ipad make my toast in the morning. Probably not and never will can it fill in as an ebook reader well yeah as good as a book, no. But If I use it enough It will warm my toast. Will the Kindle replace the book, No the book is complete and only lacking one thing to be used, the reader. Is the kindle a great device, yep, planning on buying one soon, but questioning the whole colour issue. I don’t need it for movies. I got a laptop, and itouch for that I want to read though.
And nothing works as good. I am excited by digital books because maybe publishers will get back to real bindings.

Hi my wife bought me a kindle for my birthday, got to say it is one of the best presents i have had. So quick and easy to use and set up. I don’t care about only getting books from kindle as the amount of books from kindle is enormouse and you can get books for free from kindle. I am told there is away of loaning books on the kindle but as of yet have not tried this. Also there is a great book club for the kindle run by volunteers for free.

Just a small problem that is not usually told to people before they buy a Kindle… The screen contrast is rather dark and CANNOT be changed at all, making it difficult to read sometimes in murky or less than good light conditions.. This is the main reason that most people return their Kindles back to Amazon.. Also some people find that their battery life is much, much shorter than the Month that is talked about..This is easily remedied by pushing the sleep/open button to the right for 20 seconds, this resets the Kindle and changes the battery life to the set parameters that are advertised.
You can….(if you are naughty enough) download thousands of books of the mobi kind on the internet and side-load them on your Kindle and they work perfectly….

I got the Kindle 2.0 shipped from the States to the UK just under a year ago. I absolutely love it – it took about a week to arrive. When Amazon opened the UK Kindle store last Autumn it was really easy to change it over from Amazon.com to Amazon.co.uk.

I want the Kindle 3 – but I said I would keep the current one for at least twelve months before I upgrade. That will be next month!

On the other hand, I could wait for the Kindle 4 – which based on previous release dates should be out just before or just after Xmas 2011. Decisions, decisions.

Found this extremely difficult to use. Couldnt open any of the books although you could open on the computer when the device was attached. Brought in friend who is expert and he agreed couldnt see what I was doing wrong. Have set up other ereaders before but this is going back to Costco…

Sony claims that both PRS 350 and 650 have a Pearl E-ink display. They don’t. I have been checking in many shops (including Sony Centre) and all of them show Vizplex E-ink displays on their settings.
I am bewildered.
@above. There is a free programme called Google Books Downloader which does exactly what its name says.

Apart from Neal’s caustic comment, the Kindle 3 is now available in the UK. I ordered one from Amazon, they quoted a delivery date of Jan 26th and it arrived on Jan 25th, excellent service.

Amazon have a download service and many books are free. The Kindle is also very good for reading .pdf files (I have the complete set of Full Circle Magazines which are available as .pdf’s and are free). I also find it useful to have my Mozilla Lightning calendar for the month on it (saved as a .pdf)

I’m taking college courses online and I’m wondering if I can download the books that are posted within my classroom to the Kindle3? I’m thinking the Kindle might be a better way to read my books without being online.

Also, what is the difference in the Kindle with wifi or 3G? How do you download books from your pc? Is it by usb?

I have received an email offering me a free case for my touch edition. I ordered it and I have received the case for the pocket edition, so I can not use it.
I have called the support and they don’t even know the differences between both editions, and they told me that is the same, later they told me that the offer was for the pocket only (was not true as in the email states that is for the touch).

What I can not understand is how a company like Sony is doing this things, it is better not to give anything. I usually was buying sony, but after this, no more. I have bough to my wife the kindle and works better, and 3g free on top.

@Laurence, Sony provides downloadable access to Google books via its software. You download their PC app and browse Google books from that, then it lets you download and put them on the ereader. http://ebookstore.sony.com/google-books/

i river cover story is not compatible with windows7 64 bit operating system, found out after many wasted hours by phoning waterstones help line. however i was not told of this problem at the point of sale, you are ok if you have windows7 32 bit operating system.

I am disappointed with my PRS-350 as I have so far been unable to download the elibrary software that enables the downloading of books. After several attempts I am considering returning the ebook for a refund. I have tried to find a solution but the final answer is ‘incompatible application’. Perhaps I have done something wrong several times? Any suggestions
