Great news for cheapskates! Many public libraries allow you to borrow ebooks online. Unfortunately both the Kindle and iPad do not read DRM-protected Adobe EPUB format which seems to be the most popular format for libraries. Both Amazon and Apple are in the business of selling books online and libraries take away their business so this incompatibility is likely to continue.
If you are interested in free books, you need to look at other manufacturers.

The best site I've found for ebooks is WH Smith. They are a reasonable price (insofar as all e books are ) are easy to buy and download and great choice. Much better than Waterstones and several other e book stores. Recommended

I would say that Cool-er DOES NOT HAVE any support. They do not answer to any email, even I've suggested my feed-back about localization problem. They do not interesting in anything else, only sells of this crappy device.

The list of features is very bad. It's pretty slow. I'm disappointed.

I bought a cool-er ereader in June 2010 from Mediamarkt Arena – Netherland.
About 3 weeks later the cool-er stoped working – the unit is freezing.
I sent several emails to ’support@coolreaders.com’, but there is no response from them.
I very dissapointed.

I bought a cool-er ereader in June 2010 from Mediamarkt Arena – Netherland.
About 3 weeks later the cool-er stoped working – the unit is freezing.
I sent several emails to 'support@coolreaders.com', but there is no response from them.
I very dissapointed.

less than 2 weeks into a 4 month trip to South America my wife’s unit started having problems – freezing up, getting caught in continuous loops while starting up, having the screen suddenly become garbled. A number of different fixes worked at different times but nothing actually solved the problems. Mine has also had some of the same problems but never as bad.

Eventually we were told to send hers back in mid-October (from Bolivia, paid by us, eventually reimbursed in Jan/10). Despite the fact we tracked it and knew they had received it before the end of October we never heard back until I hounded them in mid-November and finally got a response. I was told it was fixed but they were just waiting on a new software upgrade and would send it out next week. That turned out to be a blatant lie. Three weeks later I hadn’t heard anything and tried contacting them again – no response, no response. Finally, in mid-December, I got fed up and sent an angry email to everyone in the organization I could find contact info for. That apparently got their attention as I received several replies and even a phone call. Their PR rep was very helpful and got a new unit sent out immediately (which was good because apparently they could no longer locate our original one). Of course, although she also promised to send us free credit in the Cooler Bookstore we never did receive this.

cool-er stop working, the screen is frozen, and the device did not show any effect to the buttons click.
I have try to connect my cool-er to my computer, but the computer cannot detect the device, and even after the battery is fully charged, the screen is still frozen.
I also have try to reset my cool-er, but it did not work. The screen only show greyscale bars, and did not show the content of the files.

Please help tell me what to do. I think there is no service station for cool-er ereader in my country.

Thanks

The ereader sucks, I bought my from QVC. Coolet ebooks and qvx should be ashame of false advertising this product. Five months after my purchase, my coolerbook also malfunction. I think QVC and this company should reimburse everyone's money back. It's garbage and the 1-877,number is always out of order as well as there 304 area code number. they are cute on the outside but totally garbage.

I'd wanted to add that although the Kindle doesn't have natively expandable storage, all book purchases and your entire library is synced and backed up in Amazon's cloud storage system, accessible upon logging in with an internet connection. So after using up the Kindle's native storage (which is quite a bit), users can still swap in and out books from the online library. I actually like this a whole lot better than using SD cards, since in case of fire, SD card loss, corrupted hard disk etc. etc. I am safe in the knowledge that my books are safe and re-downloadable for free on Amazon's cloud.

I am looking for a reader not so much for books as to read pdf and word documents. In addition to size and weight concerns (big screen important, and willing to have it be a touch heavier if necessary), I need mark-up ability (e.g. a stylus to make notes and/or something like apple's "stickies"). In addition to size and weight concerns (big screen important, and willing to have it be a touch heavier if necessary), I need mark-up ability (e.g. a stylus to make notes and/or something like apple’s “stickies”). Advice appreciated. Thanks.

I have bought a Cool -ER and I have to say the experience has been awful. It froze day one. It was difficult to download any books and no one has responded to any emails.

Junk product and crap support. Don't touch it.

Does anyone know if the Elonex (or other e-reader) can play MP3s whilst you're reading? Quite a few say that they will play MP3s, but they don't say whether this is an either-or, i.e. only plays music OR displays e-books. thanks

I bought a cool_er e reader today in Italy where I live. When removing the plastic packaging the color coating of the device came off with the plastic packaging. Now I have to return it but live in Italy and they are not at all responsive about doing returns. I am so dissapointed in this product and I haven't even gotten to read anything!!!

Amazon’s Kindle wireless reader had a huge hurtle to overcome in order to become more than just a gimmicky gadget that would be forgotten in a couple months after its glitzy launch.
There’s something about going to the store, purchasing a hardcopy book, and rifling through the pages that e-books have never been able to compete with. Most of the backlash stems from the fact that the platforms on which those books have been displayed historically haven’t been up to the task.
The screens are too small, too bright, look too much like computers, and make you feel as if you’re still jacked into the high-tech matrix that traps us all every day of our working life.
Essentially, people buy books to get away from computers. What’s more, “book people” love books.

Interesting article, thanks.

Comparing a 10-hour battery life to a 2-week recharge cycle is not quite the same thing. If I read every night for 20-30 minutes before I go to bed (reasonable reading for someone who has loads of other things to do) and I use my iPad for nothing else, then its charge too will last me for close to a couple of weeks.

Of course, the point of the iPad is that you will end up doing lots more than just reading books on it, so your recharge cycle will probably be daily, which is not such a big deal.

But its ability to handle multiple needs is exactly what makes it more attractive than a dedicated eBook reader. One less whizmo to lug around.

BTW, I currently read on both my laptop and my iPhone and there's no eyestrain if you turn down the brightness and/or use a white text on black display layout (which most eReader software allows you to do).

Had this reader for a short time and the screen developed a fault, where only half the screen would show writing. I sent it to Singapore's McCoy Pte Ltd for repair as it was still under warranty and they replied a week later saying that the vendor said it was a customer developed fault and I would have to pay $200 and wait for 8 weeks for repairs or buy a new one from them for $300.
What a disappointment!! To my knowledge there is no way that I could have damaged the screen.
I replied to McCoy saying that I would not throw good money after bad.
Maybe, you can learn from my experience with iRiver Story. If it goes faulty, the chances are they will say it is a customer related fault, even though you registered the unit.

Cooler E-Reader - Disappointing Quality and Support

We purchased 2 Coolers in July 09 when they first came on the market and unfortunately would not recommend them to anyone. While one has generally worked ok, less than 2 weeks into a 4 month trip to South America my wife’s unit started having problems – freezing up, getting caught in continuous loops while starting up, having the screen suddenly become garbled.

Now, while the new unit doesn’t seem to suffer from the original problems, the battery appears to be defective (it lasts about 10% as long as our other one – not even a full day). I once again contacted Cooler Support, even offering to purchase a new battery, and after a third try was told:

The COOL-ERs battery is easily removable. If you do find a replacment
battery at a local battery retailer please feel free to try one out. I
currently do not have a replacement battery to offer.

Best regards,
Julie

I thought it was very generous of them to “allow” us to try to find a new battery at our own cost since they apparently don’t bother keeping replacement parts around. Unbelievable.
All in all, we’ve had nothing but headaches with Cooler and I now understand why they were cheaper than the rest. Even when they are technically working they still occasional get stuck cycling and overall they just seem poorly made. So, while I don’t have any personal experience with other models, I would recommend trying anything else since I can’t see how the quality or service could really be any worse.

As a long standing ebook reader convert since 1998. I would like to say you can buy your books for anywhere. The Kindle is more tying as you need to buy from Amazon however, I do believe they have conversion software if the book allows. Also you can purchase in your favorite formats. Epub looks great on the Sonys... You are definately not restricted also you can buy from 3rd party book stores or directly from publishers. I have last count over 10K ebooks.. and continually adding more to my collection.

I am very, very nearly ready to make a purchase of a 6" Beebook Reader as a surprise birthday present for my partner. The reason for the purchase is that now we are getting on a bit in years Ally is becoming restricted in his selection of reading material as this is determined by the size of print. An ebook reader would be a dream!
What I need to know before I take the plunge is firstly, what percentage of reading material is available in ebook form for the Beebook reader. Secondly, where and how do I buy the ebooks, and finally what 'extras' am I required to buy along with the reader, e.g. batteries, battery chargers etc., or do they come as a package?

Thank you for being there for me. Kindest regards - Janice Laurie

Hi
I want to buy a reader to go trekking. I'll be using it in a tent with only a headtorch for light. What i want to know is, will the light from the headtorch reflect in the screen of the reader? Anybody know the answer?

Hi,

I'd like to know if this reader can zoom PDF documents or enlarge the font size and reflow the text. I'm very interesting on it, but don't want to read a whole page of my PDFs in such a little screen.

Thanks

I think you could mention how easily the screen 'breaks' (dreaded barcodes) and how much it costs to replace one. Mine had hardly been used before the screen broke - no knocks, bumps or drops - it was so new to me that I was taking GREAT care with it. I am just waiting until I've saved enough to replace the screen, and then I'll have almost enough to buy a new e-reader. Hmmmm. Tough choice.

I was searching for an online ebook software and stumbled on this site, and thought maybe you could help me out. I'm trying to find epublishing software that allows you to read a particular book when logged into a website. Similar to what Coursemart.com offers. You can see what I'm talking about here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNqJY8aJUso Do you know any software like this?

The thing I'm looking for in an e-reader is that I can read newspapers, blogs and things like that on it (<a href="http://www.drivelry.com/expect-not-to-read-books-on-your-e-book/560/" rel="nofollow">and I don't think I'm alone in that</a>). All these readers you seem to be reviewing seem much smaller than I'd need for reading these kind of publications or big PDFs etc. If you wrote an article on bigger screen readers I'd be interested in what you recommend.

Good review of what looks like an impressive piece of kit. Does it have the functionality to have newspapers etc. 'delivered' to the device, like the kindle? Can you have it RSS and save blogs and such for reading outside areas with wi-fi? And can it play mp3?

The review is brilliant but I will have to crrect you when you advised that the price of this device is "£158 – A bargain".
You should take in consideration that after the delivery in UK and the tax the actual cost for the British is 211.96 GBP (with today exchange rate 13-01-10)... no so a bargain considering that in USA they are eligible for free delivery...

At the same time Amazon Uk still show in is home page the Kindle for sale....link that take you in Amazon.com.... to bad....there should not be differences in terms of availbility for such big internet-shops

"Available in Europe and the UK" is a little misleading, isn't it? It might be an international version, but you still have to purchase it on the Amazon.com website, not Amazon.co.uk, which means that basically you're still importing the damn thing. Also, the extended warranty is only available to US customers at the moment. That coupled with the fact that you can no longer access the battery like in the first Kindle, means that when it no longer holds a charge, you have to send it away to be re-fitted with a new battery ($59 for US customers) - and I'll take a stab now that this would mean sending the Kindle 2 that you *imported* from America, back to America, at a much more significant outlay for Europeans.

Sorry, but when I can log onto Amazon.co.uk and buy it there, and purchase an extended warranty that works in the UK, only then will I accept that this device is officially available to UK residents.

I would like to see a reader that could display 2 pages at a time as is normal when reading a book. 2 seperate screens would be nice, one for the LH page and the other for the RH page. A second possibility is for a device with a 10 inch screen to display the 2 pages side by side and turning the page in either direction would display the appropriate odd or even numbered page. Is there any possibility that a device like this would appear on the market. There can't be any technical reason for not doing things in this way.

I am wondering if you do reviews for those who self publish and are working to get their books on these e-readers?

I have mine on Kindle and recently uploaded a video on how to prepare one's manuscript for Amazon's Digital Text Platform at http://www.youtube.com/dlantz6#p/a/u/0/tuaP-5Bq8QM

I'd be interested in learning more about publishing on these other readers.

Thanks!
